Silver & Dust is now available from Amazon.com
Dutch americana website, Altcountry.nl
asked me to write something about my top country album during 2007.
They published it over the xmas, and here's what I wrote.
The
album that really stood out for me in 2007, is not from an up and coming band
from Idaho. It’s not from a grizzled old Texan troubadour. It's the rather
unimaginatively titled "20 Greatest Hits" from Loretta Lynn. Let me
explain.
Like most people I know, I was taken aback by "Van Lear Rose"
when it came out in 2004. Produced by Jack White, it contained some of his
trademark-distorted guitar complete with wailing feedback, but it was still
a Loretta album, and has a bunch of great songs. But it wasn't until earlier
this year when I saw Coal Miner's Daughter that I decided to dig back into the
past. The 1980 biopic stars a young Tommy Lee Jones as Loretta's husband
Mooney and Levon Helm, legendary drummer and singer with The Band as her
Dad.
Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal of the country star who was married
at 13, had four children by 20 and went on to become one of country music's
biggest stars. A truly remarkable rags to riches fairy tale. So off I went and
got my el cheapo greatest hits piece of plastic, with Blue Kentucky Girl, the
hard talkin' Fist City and her version of She's Got You, the song originally
recorded by her old friend and heroine, Patsy Cline. Listening to proto feminist protest
song The Pill you get the impression that Loretta was, and is no fool. A
tough lady who knows what she wants. Then, a few minutes later you find yourself
not sure if your supposed to laugh or cry with One's On The Way. Her voice cuts
through the occasionally standard backing to tell it like it is. There's no
beating about the bush with the lady from Butcher Hollow. And it's great to know
that she's still out there gigging. When you tell the truth in your songs,
people will always want to listen.
Cheers.... see you out
there...............eamonn

A
new review for Silver & Dust from Dutch site Alt Country came in this week.
If you can't read Dutch it's not going to make much sense, but it's a good
review. 4 out of 5.
Dowd & The Racketeers.
grote man. Silver And Dust (Cannery
(recensie)
Shabby Dress is
een Stray Cats-achtige meezinger. Straight Down The Line en Nobody Home gaan dan
opzoekt. (Peer Bataille)
Thanks to Paul Gallagher, there's a few new/old videos up on youtube. Two
versions of 'Million Miles Away,' one from Irish TV when everybody looked so
young, the other is the 1999 promo video. Type
'Eamonn Dowd & The Racketeers' into the youtube search engine, and you'll
find all videos.

It's
good to hear that Mark Verbert at Radio ZRO in Belgium is still flying The
Racketeers flag. A scan of his playlist tells us he played 'Trouble Around The
Bend' from Exit Hellsville on his show last week.
Exit Hellsville is still getting air-play on Canadian college radio. Several
DJ's at CKCU (Carleton University Radio, Ottawa) have taken to the band,
including John Westhaver, Dave Aardvark, Mike Houston, Steve Kirkland and
Jennifer Priest.
We're also on the radio in Norway. Ruben Edvin at Radio Sentrum, Kongsvinger has
been playing tracks from Exit Hellsville on his show.
A new review from the gig in Peanuts, Greiz (Germany) is now up on the
PRESS page. Thanks to Karsten Schaarschmidt for sending over the review and the
photos.
The Galway Advertiser ran this story..................

"Rockin' At The Barn Volume 4." It's a highly recommended 21 track
compilation featuring American, U.K. and Swedish alternative country acts. And
one Irish band...The Racketeers !!
It's got Rod Picott, Bob Cheevers, Pilgrim and a host of other great folks worth
checking out. The Racketeers track is the previously un-released "I Don't
Want To Talk About It." The CD is available in all good record shops in
Scandinavia, or you can buy it here directly from Dusty Records..............

Our track has been getting lots of positive feedback. Thomas Kaldijk has been
playing it on his Dutch radio shows on Radio Parkstad in Veedam, and Radio Lok
which is braodcast from Kanaalstreek. Jose Antonio Bonassi Roldan in
Cadiz, Spain has been playing the track, as well as tracks from "Exit
Hellsville". In Belgium Ray Pieters has been playing us on Goldenflash
FM103.4 broadcasting out of Antwerp with a listener ship of 200,000 !!
Closer to home, Niall Toner Snr., John Walshe on FM104 and Dan Hegarty on 2FM
are taking care of business.
Dan Hegarty has sent us his 2000 review of "Long Time Gone" which was
published at the time in Local Ireland. You can read it on the PRESS page. These
day's Dan is a top D.J on 2FM...and he's been playing the new LP on his show !!

The single, "I Don't Know You
Anymore" clocked up airplay while we were on the road in Sweden
and Finland. Today FM , DSCR, East Coast Radio and Mid West have all
played it. As have Niall Toner Snr. on his Lite FM Show Thursdays and Sundays,
and of course the folks down at Phantom FM.
The U.K. based publication Rock'n'Reel, have given "Long Time
Gone" a great great review. Read it here!
We've added a new page called The
Other It goes off on a tangent all of its
own and contains links to stuff that has little or nothing to do with music. You
might like it and you might not.
Two reviews of "Long Time Gone".... one from irishbandslive.com, and
one from UK magazine, Rock 'n' Reel, are now up on the 'Press'
page.
The Handstand is an anarchic online journal for authors of political
enquiry, poetry, philosophy and art. Edited by poet and painter Jocelyn
Braddell, the June issue, amongst other things, hosts a gallery of paintings by
Eamonn, some dating back as far as 1986. Over the years he has exhibited at
various shows including 'Western Artists' at the Galway Arts Festival ('86
and '87) 'Framing Dowd', at the Head Gallery, Ormond Multi-Media Center, Dublin
1995, and 'Eamo' at the Front Lounge, Dublin 2000. Check out the current issue
here... The
Handstand . To find the paintings, go into the
archive and check June 2002.
By coincidence, Jocelyn sent us word on the Rense
website, the same week occasional Racketeers
drummer, Henrik Mattson sent us the link. So if conspiracy theories your
thing.....
